Compulsory Equipment & Gear

  • Items supplied as part of your entry include

    • Race notes

    • Well marked event course

    • Defined transition areas

    • Kayak number sticker

    • Mountain Bike number plate(s)

    • Helmet number sticker(s)

    • Race bib(s) (to be returned)

    • Timing transponder (to be returned)

  • Compulsory equipment to be used by entrants on various stages

    Off-road Run Stages (incl. River Swimming)

    Footwear – A suitable pair of comfortable footwear for the off-road run stages.

    Backpack – A suitable comfortable backpack to carry personal & compulsory gear (see listed below) for the duration of the stage.

    Floatation or propelling assistance – Any form of floatation and/or non-motorised piece of propelling assistance equipment may be used on the swim sections, provided they are carried from the start to the finish of the entire offroad run stage.

    Down River & Open Water Kayaking Stages

    Kayak or Surf Ski – Kayak’s must have a minimum of two air bags in the rear of the craft or an airtight compartment. Tandem teams must paddle a double craft.

    Spray-deck(s) – All kayaks (Ski's excluded) must have a spray deck(s) fitted to the cockpit rim(s) when being paddled.

    Paddle – per paddler.

    Life vest / PFD – per paddler

    Dry bag – A suitable drybag to carry personal & compulsory gear (see listed below) for the duration of the stage.

    Helmet – either a kayaking or cycling helmet to be worn by all paddlers on the Day 1 down river kayak stage.

  • Compulsory equipment to be used by entrants on various stages

    Mountain Biking

    Cross-country (XC) mountain bike – Hardtail or dual suspension. E-bikes and gravel bikes are not permitted.

    Cycle helmet – In line with NZ Law, it is compulsory for everyone to wear a NZ safety approved cycle helmet when riding their bike.

    Cycle repair tools – A minimum of a multi-tool with a chain breaker, 1 spare tube, tire levers, pump or inflation device, a spare compatible chain link. Tire plugs (if running tubeless tires) are also recommended.

    Backpack – A suitable comfortable backpack to carry personal & compulsory gear (see listed below) for the duration of the stage.

  • Compulsory gear to be carried on each stage by every entrant (individual and team member)

    NOTE: Subject to the race day weather forecast, some items may be dropped from the list by the event organizers. Any change will be communicated at the race day briefing.

    Tip: It is recommended that all compulsory warm thermal* clothing items to be carried on each stage, are either stowed inside a dry bag, placed in zip lock bags or vacuum packed so they are completely watertight.

    • Seam-sealed waterproof hooded jacket or poncho to fit

    • Warm thermal* long sleeve base layer top to fit (see tip above)

    • Warm thermal* hat to fit (see tip above)

    • Complete survival blanket

    • Whistle

    • Adequate food & water – for the completion of the stage

    • Any personal medication – (if required) for the completion of the stage

    *Warm thermal means wool, merino, fleece, down, polypropylene or equivalent material.
